Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous disorder, which affects the body's central nervous system comprising of brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. In multiple sclerosis, body's immune system mistakenly attacks normal tissues instead of bacteria or foreign invaders. Therefore multiple sclerosis is also called as an autoimmune disease.

Damage to the myelin sheath, a material that protects and surrounds nerve fibers of brain and spinal cord is considered to be the main cause of multiple sclerosis. The areas that are damaged are called lesions or plaques. This damage to the myelin sheath blocks messages between the brain and the body causing multiple sclerosis symptoms.

Multiple sclerosis affects women as twice as men. Most of the people experience early multiple sclerosis symptoms between the ages 20 to 40. Multiple sclerosis occurs in four patterns namely:

  • Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
  • Primary-progressive multiple sclerosis
  • Secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis
  • Progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis may cause mild illness in some people while it can lead to permanent disability in others. Therefore multiple sclerosis diagnosis is required at a proper time so that an appropriate treatment can be taken. Though there is no permanent cure for multiple sclerosis, there are many treatment options like medications, essential oils and yoga that can stop the progression of disease.
