Gout is condition that occurs throughout the body, hence also referred as a systemic disease. Gout is caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints of the body. Gout affects approximately 2.1 million people in the United States. It is common in men between the ages of 40 and 50. In women, incidence increases after menopause. The condition is rare in children and young adults.
