Why You Should Dilute Essential Oils?
It is important to learn how to dilute your essential oils because they can be harmful to your skin if applied as is. Even though these oils are plant based. They still need to be diluted in another chemical for them to be safe for your skin. If you do not do this, then you may experience some irritation or sensitization. This is the reason why a lot of experts in aromatherapy advise that almost all essential oils should be diluted in what they call as carrier oils. While there are some essential oils that are safe for the skin like tea tree oil and lavender, other essential oils still need to be diluted. However, this is still a debate among aromatherapy experts. Some argue that even tea tree and lavender should not be applied directly on the skin.
Diluting these oils is important because it protects you. While these oils have its therapeutic effect, it can irritate or sensitize your skin. I have seen some people who have become super sensitive even with just a drop of the oil. Also, sensitization is forever. Once it happens to you, you will never be able to turn back. Irritations like dermatitis can occur. So even if some people or books say that lavender and tea tree oil are safe to be applied as is, do not follow them. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Dermatitis is an irritating skin condition that can take months to heal. So don’t do it. It is not worth the risk and money.
If you do not know what sensitization is, it is a condition where a person develops a rash or skin allergy because of the chemical. There are some chemicals that should not be applied directly on the skin. This is the reason why individuals develop this. However, some people can survive this. Sensitization after all varies. However, as I have said earlier, it always pays to be safe. In worse cases, people even find it hard to breathe when they have an allergy attack. Remember that this is not worth your life. Also, remember the permanence of sensitization. Once you become allergic to it, you will be allergic to it forever. This may be hard for you because some products contain these essential oils. Even a hint of it will quickly trigger your sensitization so be warned.
In the end, you have to remember that essential oils are just like medicines. Since they are made of chemicals, they have to be applied with care. I am not saying that aromatherapy is dangerous. It can help you if you will apply your oils the right way. If you really want to prevent irritation or sensitization, it may be best to do a skin patch test. You can do this by applying some diluted oil onto your skin. Remember to only apply diluted oil. This way, your skin will not be harmed. If nothing happens, you can now apply the oil to other parts of your body.
If you are changing your life for the better, then you may be interested in having some of these oils. A holistic lifestyle will not be complete without aromatherapy. However, remember to use your essential oils with care so they can take care of you.
