Symptoms of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a common sleeping disorder that can be very serious. In sleep apnea, your breathing stops or gets very slow while you are sleeping for 10 to 20 seconds or more. Sleep apnea happens when enough air cannot move into your lungs while you are sleeping. When you are awake, and normally during sleep, your throat muscles keep your throat open and air flows into your lungs. Here we are going to see some common symptoms of sleep apnea. Common symptoms of sleep apnea include:
- Loud snoring is the most common symptom of sleep apnea. Almost all people who have sleep apnea snore, but not all people who snore have sleep apnea.
- Frequent cessation of breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea sufferers might appear to experience an apparent struggle to breathe.
- Waking up during the night with the sensation of choking or gasping to get air into the lungs.
- Abrupt awakenings with a dry mouth or sore throat accompanied by shortness of breathe to restart breathing.
- Waking up in a sweat during the night.
- Feeling unrefreshed in the morning after a night's sleep and having trouble staying awake during the day.
- Restless tossing and turning during sleep.
- Daytime sleepiness, including falling asleep at inappropriate times, such as during driving or at work.
- Having problems with memory and concentration, difficulties in learning, feeling irritable and tired, and experiencing personality changes.
- Morning or night headaches. About half of all people with sleep apnea report headaches after waking up.
- Being overweight or rapid weight gain.
- Lethargy.
- Heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth at night.
- Getting up often during the night to urinate.
- Short attention span and Poor judgment.
- Sleep apnea sufferers may experience a lack of sexual desire due to fatigue and even impotence in men.
- Depression. Symptoms of sleep apnea and depression often overlap. Here are the symptoms that often appear with both conditions:
- Losing pleasure in daily life.
- Feeling tired, sleepy, fatigued, and poorly motivated.
- Becoming withdrawn or irritable.
- Having problems concentrating or remembering facts.
