Essential Oils for Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a bacterial infection or inflammation of the sinus cavities and blockage of the nasal sinuses. There are many causes of sinusitis, which include cold & flu, tonsillitis or allergies. The symptoms of sinusitis include nasal congestion, nosebleed, headache, ear pain, facial pain, toothache and a mild fever or cough. Essential oils are considered to be a gift to mankind as they are used to treat majority of the diseases. There are many essential oils for sinusitis. Just adding a few drops of one of the essential oil to a carrier oil (almond, Peach or Apricot oils) and massaging around the base of the head and from the inside of the eyebrows out toward the temples helps you in getting relief from sinusitis. Also adding a few drops to a bowl of hot water and inhaling it helps you in sinusitis. Given below is the list of some essential oils for sinusitis.

Eucalyptus essential oil

Eucalyptus essential oil is one of the best essential oils for sinusitis and other respiratory disorders. Because of the presence eucalyptol it has strong germicidal and antibacterial effects. It is balancing and also has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral and stimulating properties. Adding five drops of eucalyptus oil and one drop of peppermint oil helps in relieving sinusitis and chest congestion. It is also useful in treatment of asthma, bronchitis, burns, muscle aches and other urinary infections. Eucalyptus should be used with precaution and should not be used if you have high blood pressure or epilepsy. It can be fatal if ingested.

Peppermint essential oil

Peppermint essential oil when inhaled can be an excellent remedy for sinusitis, asthma, colds and flu, coughs and bronchitis. It helps to alleviate sinus pain and pressure. Due to its warm and cool fragrance and healing properties it is useful in digestion process, colic, flatulence and nausea. It can also lower temperature and clear catarrh from the upper respiratory tract. Because of its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic and anaesthetic properties it helps with muscle and joint pain, headache and toothache. Peppermint essential oil is not recommended during pregnancy.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has powerful antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory properties. Its scent is very fresh and cleansing. When inhaled it helps to relieve sinusitis. Its healing properties are useful in treating acne, abscesses, boils, burns, coughs, colds and flu, dandruff, ringworm, vaginal and infected wounds especially caused on oily skin and acne. Tea tree oil should not be taken internally and during pregnancy. Some people may be allergenic to tea tree oil so seek medical advice before using it.

Sweet Basil essential oil

Sweet basil oil is also one of the essential oil for sinusitis since it has beneficial action on the respiratory tract. The therapeutic properties of basil oil are analgesic, antidepressant and antispasmodic. Sweet Basil oil is a used for the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, nervous disorders, stress related headaches, migraines, it also improve mental clarity and memory. It is also helpful in treating arthritis and acne. Sweet Basil oil should be avoided during pregnancy. Those with sensitive skins must use this oil with care since it can irritate a sensitive skin.

Bergamot essential oil

Bergamot essential oil is extremely refreshing, uplifting, sedative, antidepressant and has a balancing effect on the hypothalamus. It is a versatile essential oil with cooling properties, which help with frustration and anger, by calming and minimizing the action of the sympathetic nervous system. Since it uplifts the spirit it people to regain self-confidence. It has antidepressant, antiseptic and antispasmodic properties. It not only helps in sinusitis but also in acne, boils, chicken pox, colds, mouth infections and sore throat. Bergamot essential oil should not be used when exposed to sunlight or tanning beds since it is photosensitizer. And due to its antispasmodic properties it should be avoided during pregnancy.

Helichrysum essential oil

It is an everlasting essential oil, which has an intense, honey, and tea-like aroma. It is one of the best essential oil for sinusitis and bronchitis. It is also used to heal bruises, wounds, colds, migraines, stress and tension.

Spearmint essential oil

Another essential oil used for relieving bronchitis and sinusitis is spearmint essential oil. Also used for relieving colds or flu and fatigue.

The other essential oils for sinusitis include Pine, Marjoram, Lavender, Cedarwood, Thyme, Sandalwood, Ginger and Rosemary. But remember to take the advice of health care provider before using any of these essential oils.
